9Narrowing of stool
In the past, this was considered a “classic” sign of colon cancer, but it should not be a cause for concern without other symptoms of colon cancer.
What this sign means is that the diameter of the stool becomes smaller, resulting in bowel movements that have a more stringy appearance.
Your stool may look like a ribbon or may be very narrow. Your stool may be only as thin as the diameter of a pen.
You may hear this referred to as “low-caliber” or “pencil-thin” stool. This is in contrast to the usual caliber of stool, which is about 1-2 inches in diameter.
At the same time, if your stool is more narrow than usual, it could just be that the consistency is loose and you need more fiber in your diet.
